Kirkleatham Miners Graves

Kirkleatham wasn’t a mining village like so many in our area, but the graveyard at St Cuthbert’s still contains two graves that mention a specific mine on the inscription, there could be others in this cemetery who also died in the local mines.

Charles Acklam Tyreman

The Tyreman family had strong links to mining in Dunsdale

1901 census Dunsdale, 17 year old Charles not yet a miner.

He was kirving (undermined) in the bottom part of the seam when a piece of stone suddenly burst away from a natural break in the upper part of the seam, and, falling upon him, caused fatal injuries.

The double tragedy here is that his wife was pregnant at the time, with son Charles born just 3 months later on 11th December 1907.

Robert Hewson

In 1881 Robert was a resident of Yearby village
