This short piece of video footage was recorded in January 1964 when the last ironstone mine in Cleveland closed at North Skelton.

If possible I would like to identify the individuals interviewed.

The baby is my brother David Jackson with my father John “Jigger” Jackson.
That’s fantastic, I’ve added the information onto the website.
This picture is Vic davison
Fantastic to see this Chris. Who filmed it ? Was it a news story? And where did you dig it up?
Its an ITV news report from some time in the 1980s giving the clunky voice-over at the start. I don’t know if the original 1964 footage was left over from ‘End of an Era’ or if a separate group of reporters at the same time. Turned up on a VHS that Peter Tuffs gave me.
Excellent information and photos of communities my grandfather, John Wm Goodwill, worked in the local mines of the early 1900’s. His family lived & worked in Lingdale, Skelton & Boosbeck before emigrating to Canada in 1912.
I don’t know people in the clip but I have a memory (second hand) of the event. My father, Mr Stanley Berry, was a local teacher -at Brotton then Loftus Secondary Modern Schools. Helen taught woodwork and metal work and will have taught many boys who went on to be miners. My dad was at the pit on the day it closed (I don’t know why) and he was given what he told me was the last lamp to come out of the pit. This is a treasured possession of mine and reminds me not only of my father but of my childhood in the area.
I always thought it was Kilton pit – are the names North Skelton and Kilton interchangeable?
