Timeline

  • 1864 – Used by Bell Brothers to give a route for stone from Skelton Old Shaft
  • 1874 – Gjers Mill and Company lease 20 more acres from Mr Wharton
  • 1879 – Collapse under the railway mine nearly causes train accident.
  • 1883 – 20 acres of Wharton ironstone completely worked out.
  • 1886 – Mine closes, 70 men paid off.

Known locally as “Branch Mine” due to its entrance under the railway

Spa Mine around 1905 – Fox and Hounds on right and houses on left are still there today.
